Least grebe

The Least Grebe (Tachybaptus domiicus) is found from south Texas to north Argentina. It lives singly or in pairs, in mostly covered-vegetation ponds or near margins of larger bodies of water, on slow-flowing rivers. Its size is of 2 cm (9 inches) in height and 150 g in weight.

Its hindneck and upperparts are blackish-brown. Rest of head and neck are dark grayish. Underparts dusky, mottled or mixed with white. Bill black with grayish to horn-color at tip. This bird eats aquatic insects, crustaceans, small fishes and frogs.

Brown Pelican

The Brown Pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis) is unmistakable since it is the only common pelican of our area. It dwells in the Pacific Coast from Washington to N Peru, Atlantic, Gulf and Caribbean coasts and islands from North Carolina to E Venezuela.

109cm (43”), 3kg. Body dark gray-brown; upperparts feathers with silvery “frosting”; head and neck white; bill brownish; pouch and facial skin grayish; feet black. Young: Head, neck and upperparts brown; belly white. Breeding: neck black; chestnut nuchal crest; head tinged with yellowish; orbital skin reddish; bill with rosy tinge.
