White-crested Coquette

The White-crested Coquette (Lophornis adorabilis) resides in Costa Rica and west Panama. Lives height in canopy, coming down to shrub level at edges, and in second growth. Its size is of 7 cm (2 inches) in height and 2.7 g in weight.

Forehead and lores are coppery-bronze, with an erect white crest on forecrown. Rest of upperparts bronzy-green; lower rump and upper tail-coverts purplish-bronze. Foreneck white and rest of underparts cinnamon-rufous, flecked with green on sides and of breast. Bill red with black tip, and feet dusky.

The Green-crowned Brilliant (Helidoxa jacula) ranges from Costa Rica to west Ecuador. Its natural place is in wet highland forest, from middle understory well up into canopy, also at gasps edges, and adjacent tall second growth. Adults are 13 cm (5 inches) in height and 9.5 g in weight.

Its forehead, crown, lores, throat, and breast are glittering green. Rest of upperparts and belly are bright bronzy-green. Tail blue-black, and foreneck with metallic violet spot. Bill black and feet dusky. Visits flowers of Heliconia along streams, riverbanks, or in second growth.

Fiery-throated Hummingbird

The Fiery-throated Hummingbird (Patenrpe insignis) lives from Costa Rica to Panama. Its home is in forest canopy, descending to shrub level at edges, openings and in second growth. Its size is of 11 cm (4 inches) in height and 5.7 g in weight.

Its crown is royal-blue, and sides of head and hindneck are black. Back bright green, and upper tail-coverts bluish. Tail dark blue, and throat glittering rosy copper-orange. Center of breast violet-blue, and belly green to bluish. Feet dusky, and bill black except rose-pink basal half of lower mandible. This bird favors flowers of epiphytes, especially ericads, bromeliads, vines and shrubs.

Long-billed Starthroat

The Long-billed Starthroat (Heliomaster longirostris) is found from south Mexico to northwest Peru, Bolivia, central Brazil, and Guianas. It lives in forest canopy and edge, tall second growth, shady gardens and pastures, and coffee and banana plantations in humid places. Adults are 11 cm (4 inches) heights and 7 g weights.

Its forehead and crown are glittering metallic blue to blue-green. Rest of upperparts rather dark bronze-green. Chin blackish, and gorget dark metallic purple. Breast gray, flecked with bronze-green laterally. Bill and feet black. It visits flowers of banana and Heliconia.

Plain-capped Starthoat

The Plain-capped Starthroat (Heliomaster constantii) inhabits from northwest Mexico to Costa Rica. Its place is in canopy and edge of dry and evergreen forest, also coffee plantations, second growth, dry scrub, and isolated savanna trees. Olders are 12 cm (4 inches) in height and 7.5 g in weight.

Above dark bronzy-green, with crown duskier. Chin and face dusky, and gorget iridescent rose-red to orange-red. Below is mostly dull gray, flecked with bronze-green laterally. Bill black, and feet dusky. Feeds on flowers of Erythrina.
