Squirrel Cuckoo
The Squirrel Cuckoo (Piaya cayana) lives from Mexico to North Argentina. It is seen in pairs or singly, in canopy and edges of woodlands, and scattered trees in open country. Adults are 46 cm (18 inches) in height and 105 g in weight.
Its upperparts and head are chestnut-rufous. More vinaceous on throat and upper breast. Lower breast gray, bill and orbital skin yellowish-green, legs gray. This bird eats caterpillars, katydids, cicadas, spiders and small lizards.
Yellow-billed Cuckoo
The Yellow-billed Cuckoo (Coccyzus americanus) breeds from South Canada to North Mexico and West Indies. It is found in winter from Central America to Peru and North Argentina. Its natural habitats are coastal scrub, hedgerows, and forest edge. In winter prefers evergreen forests and mangroves. Adults are 30 cm (12 inches) in height and 50 g in weight.
It is above grayish-brown, broadly tipped with white, and below dull white. Bill deep yellow, and legs slaty. It feeds on insects, and lives in small groups.
Mangrove Cuckoo
The Mangrove Cuckoo (Coccyzus minor) breeds from North Mexico and Florida to Costa Rica. In winters in South America. This bird frequents gallery forest, thickets in dry forest, scrub, mangroves, and forest edge. Adults are 32 cm (12 inches) in height and 65 g in weight.
This large bird has a black mask and buffy underparts. Above grayish-brown, and below pale buff to deep cinnamon-buff. Upper mandible black, lower yellow and legs slaty. It feeds on large insects and Anolis lizards.
Cocos Cuckoo
The Cocos Cuckoo was named by Scientifics as Coccyzus ferrugineus. It is endemic of Coco Island in the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest, subtropical or tropical moist montane forest, and subtropical or tropical moist shrubland. Adults are 33 cm (13 inches) in height and 70 g in weight.
Its forehead and crown slaty. Rest of upperparts are grayish-brown. Upper mandible black, lower bright yellow with black tip. This animal feeds on large insects and Anolis.
Black-billed Cuckoo
The Black-Billed Cuckoo (Coccyzus erythropthalmus) breeds in Canada and Northeast United States. In winter it lives from North Venezuela and North Colombia to Bolivia. This migrant lives prefers scrubby areas and forest edge. Its measures are of 30 cm (12 inches) in height and 43 g in height.
It is above grayish-brown and below dull white. Bill black except blue-gray base of lower mandible and legs blue-gray. Its diet is based on caterpillars and katydids
Striped Cuckoo
The Striped Cuckoo (Tapera naevia) inhabits from Mexico to Ecuador, Argentina and Brazil. It is found in open country with scattered trees and thickets, scrubby pastures and agricultural land. Its size is 30 cm (12 inches) in height, and 55 g in weight.
Some features of this bird are its short bushy crest, short decurved bill, and crown feathers dark brown. Upperparts cinnamon-brown, below dull white, chest brown, bill horn-color and legs brownish. Its diet is based on insects like grasshoppers.
