Pheasant Cuckoo

The Pheasant Cuckoo (Dromococcyx phasianellus) ranges from South Mexico to Northeast Argentina. This animal lives alone or in pairs, in thickets at forest edge, in second growth or scrubby woodlands. Its size is of 37 cm (15 inches) in height and 96 g in weight.

This small-headed bird is above dark brown with dull buff feather-edges. Wings and upper tail-coverts glossed with bronzy-green. Face, neck, and chest buffy, rest of underparts white, and legs grayish-brown. This bird eats insects like grasshoppers and cicadas, small lizards and nestlings.

The Great Green Macaw (Ara ambigua) lives from E Honduras to NW Colombia and W Ecuador.

The Crimson-fronted Parakeet (Psittacara finschi) is the largest Costa Rican parakeet. Found from SE Nicaragua to W Panama.

28cm (11”), 150g. Only long-tailed species with red under wing. Mostly green, below paler and yellower; forehead crimson; wing-linings orange red, mixed with yellow in carpal area; red spot on thigh; scattered red feathers on foreneck and face; flight feathers below yellowish. Iris orange; eye-ring white; bill horn-color with grayish tip; feet dull grayish. Young: Little or no red on forehead, neither on thigh or foreneck; wing-linings more orange.

The Lesser Ground-Cuckoo (Morococcyx erythropygius) lives from Mexico to Costa Rica. It is seen in pairs or small flocks, in savannas, and scrubby woodlands borders. This small animal is 25 cm (10 inches) in height and 63 g in weight.

It is above grayish-brown and glossed with bronzy-green on wings and tail. Below cinnamon-rufous, palest on throat, darker and duller on lower belly and crissum. With colorful facial pattern, bill yellow and legs yellow-brown. Its diet is based on grasshoppers and other insects.

Adults are above dark brown, glossed with green on wings and purple on tail. Crest blackish and face cinnamon. Below grayish-brown. Bill dull greenish-yellow and legs gray. It feeds on large insects, scorpions, centipedes, spiders, small frogs and lizards. Sometimes fruits, and lives singly or in small groups.

The Greater Ani (Crotophaga major) breeds from Costa Rica and Panama to the North part of Argentina. This animal habits in mangroves, swamps, and the edges of forests near water. Its measures are 48 cm (19 inches) in length and 170 g in weight.

Adults are blue-glossed black, with a long tail, a black bill and white iris. Youngers have a dark iris. Living in noisy groups, this bird feeds on large insects, lizards and small frogs.
