Maroon-chested Ground-Dove

The maroon-chested ground dove (Claravis mondetoura) is found in Bolivia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Columbia and Venezuela. Its natural habitat is in subtropical or tropical moist montage forests, between 900 and 300o meters above sea. Its size is 21.5 cm (8 inches) and 95 g in weight.

Some features are its throat and face whitish, upperparts dull brown, bill black, pink legs, fore neck and breast maroon-purple. They eat seeds and fruit from the Phytolacca plant.

Ruddy Quail-Dove

The Ruddy Quail-Dove (Geotrygon montana) inhabits from the Southside part of Mexico to the Northeast part of Argentina and in West Indies. Lives in humid forests, cacao plantations, and shady gardens. Its measures are 23 cm (9 inches) in height, and 125 g in weight.

This bird is short-tailed, stout-bodied and with a strong sexual dimorphism. Males with face and throat pinkish-buff, forehead rufous and belly fluffy. Rest of upperparts rufous-chestnut, glossed with metallic purple. Females with forehead and face dull cinnamon, throat whitish, cere and bill dull red. Upperparts, sides and flanks dull olive-brown.

The Violaceous Quail-Dove (Geotrygon violacea) inhabits from Nicaragua to Bolivia and North Argentina. This bird prefers dark, heavily shaded undergrowth of forest and cacao plantations. Its size is of 23 cm (9 inches) and its weight of 165 g.

This small dove has short legs, small head, unstriped face and drooped bill. Adults have a hind neck and upper back violet and belly white. Its crown, face, throat, and breast are pale-gray. Forages for seeds and fruits in lowlands places (600 meters).

The Olive-backed Quail-Dove (Geotrygon veraguensis) ranges from Costa Rica to Ecuador. They live singly or in pairs, in dense wet forest in foothills up to 450 m. Adults are 21.5 cm (9 inches) and weigh 165 g.

This dark and terrestrial dove has a forehead white, with upper parts dark- olive brown. Also, they have a bill black, legs dull coral-red, white throat, and neck dark brownish-gray. This bird feeds on seeds, small fruits and small invertebrates.

The White-tipped Dove (Leptotila verreauxi) ranges from South Texas to West Bolivia. Also known as White-fronted Dove, this bird lives in lowlands (800m – 1500m) the length of Pacific slope. Inhabits open woodlands, coffee plantations, gardens, fields and roadsides. Its measures are 26 cm (10 inches) in height and 165 g in weight.

This medium sized dove has a cinnamon-rufous wing-linings and white-tipped tail. Other features are throat whitish, nape, crown, sides and back of neck gray-brown. Rest of upperparts are dull-brown. This bird is never seen in flocks. It feeds on seeds, grit and small insects.

They live in coffee, cacao plantations or in evergreen lowlands forest (approximately 1000 m elevation) and is always observed singly or in pairs. Adults are 25 cm in height (10 inches) and 165 g in weigh.

It has a grey chest, crown and hind neck, with brown wings and tail and red feet. Is diet is of fruits, seeds and grits.
