Scintillant Hummingbird

The Scintillant Hummingbird (Selasphorus scintilla) is found in Costa Rica and Panama. This bird frequents brushy forest edge, scrubby pastures, hedgerows, young second growth, coffee plantations, and occasionally rural dooryards and suburban gardens. Adults are 6.5 cm (2 inches) in height and 2 g in weight.

Above is bronzy-green, and its upper tail-coverts edged with rufous. Tail broadly striped with black and rufous. Gorget brilliant orange-red, and front and sides of neck white. Breast and belly mostly cinnamon, spangled with green, and bill and feet black. Visits a variety of small and insect-pollinated plants.

White-winged Becard

The White-winged Becard (Pachyramphus polychopterus) is found from Guatemala to north Argentina. It lives in humid areas, in light woodland, semi-open, shady plantations, and old second-growth, also in mangroves, and mainly in evergreen gallery forest. Its measures are of 14 cm (5 inches) in height and 21 g in weight.

Its pileum is glossy blue-black, and its back, wings, and tail are black. Sides of head, entire underparts, rump, and upper tail-coverts are dark slate-gray. Bill silver-gray, with black tip, and legs plumbeous. They eat caterpillars, beetles, leafhoppers, spiders, and small berries.

Canivet’s Emerald

The Canivet’s Emerald (Chlorostilbon canivetii) ranges from northwest and central Mexico to central Panama. It prefers scrubby savannas, second growth, edges of disturbed forest, and cultivated areas and gardens. Matures are 8 cm (3 inches) in height and 2.6 g in weight.

Males are above bronzy-green, brightest on forehead, and below glittering emerald-green. With blue-black retrices, tipped with bronzy. Females are below pale gray. Feet black, upper mandible black, and lower red with a black tip. Visits flowers of shrubs, herbs, and vines.

Black-and-white Becard

The Black-and-white Becard (Pachyramphus albogriseus) inhabits from Costa Rica to northwest Peru and north Venezuela. It prefers upper understory and canopy of wet forest, sometimes in edges and adjacent tall second growth. Adults are 14 cm (5 inches) in length and 20 g in weight.

Its pelium is glossy black, wings black, and its back, rump, and base of tail are dark gray. Sides of head, nuchal collar, and entire underparts are pale gray. Bill blue-gray with black tip, and legs blue-gray. It eats fruits or insects.

Rose-throated Becard

The Rose-throated Becard (Pachyramphus aglaiae) lives from southeast Arizona and south Texas to Costa Rica. Its place is in canopy of deciduous woods and evergreen gallery forest, and scrubby second growth. Its measures are 16 cm (6 inches) in height and 33 g in weight.

Pileum glossy black, and rest of upperparts are blackish-slate. Below is slate-gray, darkest on breast, with at most a faint tinge of rose on throat. Upper mandible black, lower blue-gray, and legs are plumbeous. Its diet is based on insects like caterpillars, and fruits.

Violet-headed Hummingbird

The Violet-headed Hummingbird (Klais guimeti) resides from north Honduras to northwest Bolivia and west Brazil. They inhabit canopy and edged of forest, also tall second growth, open country, and gardens with flowering trees and shrubs. Its measures are 7.5 cm (3 inches) in length and 2.8 g in weight.

Its head, including throat, is bright violet-blue. Rest of upperparts are bronzy-green and tail more bluish. Mostly of underparts ash-gray, spotted with green laterally. Bill black and feet dusky. Feeds on flowers like Warscewiczia, Stachytarpheta, Taetsia, and Hampea.

Scaly-breasted Hummingbird

The Scaly-breasted Hummingbird (Phaeochroa cuvierii) lives from Belize to north Colombia. Its home is in forest edge, tall second growth, semi-open, clearings with scattered trees, and mangroves. Adults are 12 cm (4 inches) in height and 9.5 g in weight.

It is mostly bronzy-green, and dullest on crown. Feathers of throat, breast, and sides broadly fringed with dull buff. Belly grayish-buff, and corners of tail dull white. Feet black, and bill black except pink basal half in lower mandible. Visits terrestrial bromeliads, and trees.

Violet Sabrewing

The Violet Sabrewing (Campylopterus hemileucurus) ranges from south Mexico to west Panama. This bird prefers understory and edges of mountain forest, especially streamsides and ravines; also lives in patches of woods, old second growth, and banana plantations. Its size is of 15 cm (6 inches) in height and 11 g in weight.

In males, its head, underparts and upper back are deep violet. Wing-coverts and posterior upperparts are dark green. Females are above entirely dark green, and below gray with violet gorget. Bill and feet black. It feeds on Heliconia, bananas, and understory shrubs.
