Mourning Dove

The Mourning Dove (Zenaida macroura) breeds from South Canada to Panama. The bird is also known as the American mourning dove or the rain dove and it lives in urban areas, farms, prairie, grassland, and lightly wooded area It ranges from 30 cm (12 inches) in length and a mass of 100 g.

This slim bird has a small-headed, a long pointed tail, a crown, a nape, and hind neck slate. Males and females are similar in appearance, they are light grey and brown in color.

The Parasitic Jaeger (Stercorarius parasiticus) breeds on Artic tundras, and winters in oceans of Southern Hemisphere. Is found in small groups principally in Pacific coast. Adults are 45 cm (12 inches) in height and 475 g in weight.

In winters, feathers of back edged with dull buffy, and crown and hindneck streaked. Under and upper tail-coverts barred with blackish. In breeding and its pale phase, most of underparts are white, and tinged with yellowish on head and neck. In its dark phase, below is uniform sooty-brown. Eats fishes.

The Long-tailed Jaeger (Stercorarius longicaudus) breeds in high Artic, and winters in south Atlantic and southeast Pacific oceans. Is found near coasts. Matures are 38 cm (15 inches) in height and 300 g in weight.

In winter, feathers of cap and mantle are dusky, edged with pale grayish. Crissum and upper tail-coverts barred with black and white. In breeding, cap blackish, and sides of head washed with yellow. Nuchal collar and underparts white. Bill dusky, legs pale blue, and feet white. Feeds on grasshoppers and fishes.

The Turquoise-browed Motmot (Eumomota superciliosa) is found from southeast Mexico to Costa Rica. It prefers deciduous woodland and evergreen gallery forest, or savannas trees, edges of mangroves, and low scrubby thickets. Adults are 34 cm (13 inches) in height and 65 g in weight.

Center of throat black, bordered by turquoise stripe. Center of back rufous, belly pale cinnamon-rufous. Rest of head, neck, and body rich olive-green, darkest on crown. Bill and feet black. This bird eats insects, spiders, small lizards, snakes, butterflies, bees or dragonflies.

The American Pygmy Kingfisher (Chloroceryle aenea) resides from tropical Mexico to west Ecuador, central Bolivia, and central Brazil. It frequents small woodland streams, pools, puddles, and small channels in mangroves. Its measures are 13 cm (5 inches) in height and 18 g in weight.

This small bird has rufous underparts, and white belly. Above is dark metallic green. Its cheeks and throat are deep orange-buff, shading to rich dark rufous on breast, sides, and flanks. It eats small fishes and insects.

The Black-chested Jay (Cyanocorax affinis) lives from Costa Rica to North Colombia and Northwest Venezuela. They inhabit in gallery woodland, forest cacao plantations and banana plantations. Matures are 36 cm (14 inches) in height and 205 g in weight.

This large bird has sides of head, throat and breast black. A short blue malar stripe, nape purplish, wings and tail dark violet-blue, and bill and feet black. Its diet is based on insects, small lizards and frogs, fruits and many sorts.
