Snowy Cotinga
The Snowy Cotinga (Carpodectes nitidus) ranges from the North part of Honduras to Panama. It resides in pairs or small groups in canopy or wet forests. Adults are 22.5 cm (9 inches) in height and 105 g in weight.
This medium-sized bird has a dovelike forehead, with broad wings and short tail. Above is pale bluish-gray, darkest on crown and below white. Wings and tail dusky and legs blackish. This bird eats fruits, mistletoes and figs.
Northern Jacana
The Northern Jacana (Jacana spinosa) ranges from south Texas and north Mexico to west Panama. Its place is in ponds, marshes, flooded pastures, and riverbanks, near water lilies, water hyacinths, or grasses. Olders are 23 cm (9 inches) in height and 95 g in weight.
Head, neck, and breast are black. Body chestnut-maroon, and remiges pale yellow-green tipped with blackish. Cere pale blue-gray, and legs greenish. Bill and frontal plate bright yellow. Eats aquatic insects, small fishes and snails, or seeds.
Wattled Jacana
The Wattled Jacana (Jacana jacana) ranges from Costa Rica and west Panama to east Peru and north Argentina. Lives in humid places like riverbanks, streams and marshes. Its sise is of 23 cm (9 inches) in height and 95 g in weight.
Head, neck, body and tail entirely black, more or less glossed with purplish. Wattles and base of bill crimson to magenta, and rest of bill yellow-orange. Legs grayish. Feeds on small aquatic animals and insects.
Black-necked Stilt
The Black-necked Stilt (Himantopus mexicanus) breeds from west and southeast USA to south Chile and south Argentina. Frequents shallow salt or freshwater, in ponds, lagoons, Salinas, and sometimes tidal flats and estuaries. Adults are 38 cm (15 inches) in height and 150 g in weight.
Top and sides of head, hindneck and upperparts are black. Forehead, lores, eyespots, entire underparts, and rump are white. Tail pale gray, bill black, and legs pink. Feeds on small aquatic insects, crustaceans and mollusks.
American Avocet
The American Avocet (Recurvirostra americana) breeds in west North America. In winters lives from south USA to south Mexico and rarely in Costa Rica. Resides singly or in small groups in marshes and salinas. Adults are 46 cm (18 inches) in height and 350 g in weight.
Head and neck pale gray. Center of back, scapulars, secondaries, and underparts are white. Rest of upperparts black, and rump and tail pale gray. Bill black, and legs blue-gray. Its diet is based on seeds, and small aquatic insects and crustaceans.
