Stripe-tailed Hummingbird

The Striped-tailed Hummingbird (Eupherusa eximia) is found from east Mexico to West Panama. It prefers wet forest, mainly in canopy but descents to shrub level in gasps, along edges, or in adjacent semi-open or second growth. Matures are 9.5 cm (3 inches) in height and 4.3 g in weight.

Above is bronzy-green, with tail mostly dusky-bronze. Below is glittering green, duller on belly. Feet dusky flesh, and bill black. This vertebrate visits flowers of trees, shrubs, and epiphytes.

Black-bellied Hummingbird

The Black-bellied Hummingbird (Eupherusa nigriventris) inhabits in Costa Rica and Panama. Its home is in wet forests of lower middle elevations, males mostly in canopy, and females descend to shrub level along edges and at gaps. Adults are 8 cm (3 inches) in height and 3.4 g in weight.

Its forecrown, face, and underparts are velvety black, with white crissum. Above is bronzy-green, duskier on central retrices, and secondaries rufous, tipped with black. Bill black, and feet dusky-flesh. Feeds on flowers of trees and epiphytes.

The White-tailed Emerald (Elvira chionura) lives in Costa Rica and Panama. It frequents humid mountain forests, semi-open, shaded gardens. Males more in canopy, and females more in understory. Its size is of 7.5 cm (3 inches) in length and 3.2 g in weight.

Above is bronzy-green, shading to dark coppery-bronze on upper tail-coverts and central retrices. Below mostly glittering green, with belly and crissum white. Bill black, except pink lower half, and feet dark gray. Lives in groups and visits flowers of epiphytes, trees, shrubs, and bananas.

Coppery-headed Emerald

The Coppery-headed Emerald (Elvira cupreiceps) resides in Costa Rica. Is found in and beside wet highland forest; both sexes at all level at edges, gaps, and semi-open. This small bird is 7.5 cm (3 inches) in height and 3.2 g in weight.

Its crown, upper tail-coverts, and central retrices are coppery-bronze. Above is bronze-green, and below glittering green. Center of belly dark purplish. Feet dusky-flesh, and bill black except pink basal half of lower mandible. This bird feeds on small blossoms of trees, epiphytes, and shrubs.

Snowcap

The Snowcap (Microchera albocoronata) lives from Honduras to West Panama. It is found in canopy and edges of wet forest, also adjacent semi-open and tall second growth. Its size is of 6.5 cm (2 inches) in height and 2.5 g in weight.

Its crown is shining white, and rest of head and body deep wine-purple. Central retrices purplish-bronze, and lateral white, tipped with dusky. Feet and bill are black. It eats flowers of trees, epiphytes, shrubs, and vines.

Bronze-tailed Plumeleteer

The Bronze-tailed Plumeleteer (Chalybura urochrysia) ranges from east Honduras to northwest Ecuador. It is also known as Red-footed Plumeleteer. Its place is in forested regions, but prefers edges, stream banks, gaps, and shady second growth. Matures are 11 cm (4 inches) in height and 7 g in weight.

Above is dark bronzy-green, shading to purplish-bronze on upper tail-coverts. Tail purplish-black; throat and breast glittering dark green. Belly dusky-bronze, and crissum sooty-blackish. Feet bright pink to red, and bill black except pink below. Pollinates Cephaelis or Heliconias.

Sharpbill

The Sharpbill (Oxyruncus cristatus) lives in Costa Rica and some places of Peru, Brazil and Paraguay. This small bird inhabits in canopy of wet forests, high in trees. Adults are 16.5 cm (6 inches) in height and 42 g in weight.

It has black crown, mixed with olive, hindneck dusky, and rest of the upperparts olive-green. Face and underparts pale yellowish, brightest on belly. Face and throat scaled, breast and sides spotted with black. It feeds on insects and spiders, seeds and berries.
