Red-tailed Hawk

The Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) breeds in North America, and lives in winters from Nicaragua to Panama. It is seen in open or scrubby country or broken forest in highlands, in pastures and volcanic slopes. Adults are 58 cm (23 inches) in height and 900 g in weight.

They are above dark brown, and below white, shading to cinnamon in sides. Tail cinnamon-orange, and chest streaked with dark brown. Inmatures are above spotted and streaked with white, and with buffy tail. It eats small mammals, lizards and birds.

Mangrove Black-Hawk

The mangrove Black-hawk (Buteogallus subtilis) is a chunky bird with broad wings and a short, ample tail. You can find it mostly near water: coastal mangroves, beaches, mudflats, rivers, swamps and marshes. It eats mainly crabs, that’s why it’s popularly known as “Gavilán Cangrejero”. You can find it from SW USA and West Indies to NW Peru and Guyana.

The American White Pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) breeds locally in W and C North America; winters in S to Guatemala, accidentally to Nicaragua and Costa Rica. It prefers open waters.

This bird (Anhinga anhinga) ranges from Central United States to Ecuador, Argentina and Uruguay. It is usually seen in lakes, rivers, freshwater, lagoons, and swamps. This long bird is 86 cm (34 inches) in height and 1.2 kg inn weight.

Adults have a small head, thin neck, and long bill. Plumage glossy black, tail tipped with buffy white, and feet black. It has a very long neck and bill. With head black, neck maroon, lower foreneck silver, belly chestnut and upperparts dark glossy green. Facial skin yellow-green, legs blackish, and blackish bill shading to grayish-green. It feeds on small fishes, frogs and lizards.

The Boat-Billed Heron (Cochlearius cochlearius) ranges from Mexico to West Ecuador, Bolivia and North Argentina. It is seen in wooded riverbanks, estuaries, swamp and pond margins, and mangroves. It size is of 51 cm (20 inches) and its weight is of 600 g.

This stocky bird has a big head with large and dark eyes. Whit forehead and throat white; crown, long bushy crest, and patch at base of hindneck black. Rest of upperparts are dull ash-gray. Bill and facial skin black, and legs yellow-green. By day roots in groups of up to 50 in trees, at nigh solitary when fishing.
