Lesser Scaup

The Lesser Scaup (Aythya affinis) breeds from central Alaska and central Canada to northwest USA, and in winter lives in north South America, West Indies, and Hawaii. It prefers freshwater marshes, lakes, and sloughs. Adults are 43 cm (17 inches) in height and 800 g in weight. Its head is black with purple gloss.

Chest, tail-coverts, and tail are black. Rest of the body plumage is white. Bill pale bluish with white tip. It feeds on aquatic plants, snails, insects, and small fishes.

Masked Duck

The Masked Duck (Nomonyx dominicus) ranges from Texas and West Indies to South America. Its place is around low aquatic vegetation, mudbars, and shallow water. Its measures are 33 cm (13 inches) heights and 375 g in weights.

Its crown and face are black. Neck and chest are chestnut. Mantle scalloped with black and rusty. Below cinnamons, spotted with black on sides and flanks. Bill bright blue and legs grayish. Its diet is based on plants and invertebrates.

Slaty-breasted Tinamou

The Slaty-breasted Tinamou (Crypturellus boucardi) ranges from southeast Mexico to Costa Rica. It frequents dense undergrowth in wet forest and old second growth. Its size is of 28 cm (11 inches) in height and 500 g in weight.

Males have a whitish throat, and its head, neck, breast, and upper back are dark gray. Rest of upperparts are dark brown, barred with black. Upper mandible is black, and lower horn-color to yellowish. They eat fallen fruits and seed, including palms, ants, and other insects, and sometimes small lizards and frogs.
