Crowned Woodnymph

The Crowned Woodnymp (Thalurania colombica) is seen from central Mexico to north Colombia and west Venezuela. This bird prefers wet forests of lowlands and foothills, including adjacent edges, tall second growth and semi-open. Its measures are 10 cm (4 inches) heights and 4.5 g weights.

Its crown, upper back, shoulders and belly are deep violet. Rest of upperparts are dark green. Throat and chest are glittering green. Tail blue-black, bill black, and feet dusky. Visits flowers of epiphytes and Heliconia.

Black Swift

The Black Swift (Cypseloides niger) breeds from South Alaska to Costa Rica and lives in winter from Mexico to some parts of South America. This animal is found in mountains cliffs, usually near or behind waterfalls. This small bird is 18 cm (7 inches) in height and 35 g in weight.

Adults are black, above glossed with bluish, below paler and grayer. Whitish scaling on forehead, bill and feet black. It lives in groups, and eats hymenopterans (winged ants, bees, and wasps), flies and beetles.

The White-bellied Emerald (Amazilia candida) lives from central Mexico to Costa Rica. It prefers forest edge, semi-open, second growth. Its size is of 8.5 cm (3 inches) in height and 4 g in weight.

Above is greenish-bronze, tinged with purplish on forehead, crown and upper tail-coverts. Tail dull bronze. Below is white, speckled with bronze-green on sides of throat, breast and sides. Upper mandible black, lower pink, with black tip, and feet dusky. Feeds at shrubs and herbs.

Blue-chested Hummingbird

The Blue-chested Hummingbird (Amazilia amabilis) resides from northeast Nicaragua to east Ecuador. This bird prefers open woodland, tall second growth, banks of streams and rivers, semi-open, and large treefall gaps. Its size is of 8.5 cm (3 inches) in height and 4.2 g in weight.

Its crown is glittering green, and upperparts bronzy-green. Central retrices purplish-bronze and chin dark green. Chest and throat blue-violet, and belly grayish. Bill black, except pink basal half of lower mandible, and feet dusky. This bird pollinates flowers of trees, shrubs and herbs.

Charming Hummingbird

The Charming Hummingbird (Amazilia decora) inhabits in Costa Rica and Panama. It is also called Beryl-crowned Hummingbird. It is found in open woodland, coffee plantations, second growth, gardens with scattered trees, and in forested areas along streams, riverbanks, and in clearings. Adults are 9 cm (3 inches) in height and 4.5 g in weigh.

Its crown is glittering blue-green. Upperparts, central retrices, lower breast and sides are bronzy-green. Upper tail-coverts purplish, chin dark green, and lateral retrices blue-black. Belly buffy-gray, feet dusky, and bill black. Visits flowers, shrubs, epiphytes and trees.

The Mangrove Hummingbird (Amazilia boucardi) lives only in Costa Rica. Its place is restricted to mangroves where its favorite flower, Pacific mangrove. Its measures are 9.5 cm (3 inches) in height and 4.5 g in weight.

Above is uniform bronzy-green. Its throat and chest are bright bluish-green, becoming bronzy on lower breast and sides. Belly dull white, feet dusky, and bill black except pinkish base of lower mandible. This bird also visits flowers of other trees, vines and epiphytes.

The Blue-tailed Hummingbird (Amazilia cyanura) resides from south Mexico to Nicaragua and accidentally in Costa Rica. Its natural habits are open woodland, edges, shed in trees in coffee plantations, and young second growth. Its size is of 9 cm (3 inches) in height and 4.5 g in weight.

This bird is identical to Sleety-vented Hummingbird except secondaries rufous, with dusky tips. And its tail slightly more violet-blue. This bird pollinates flowers, especially Inga flowers.

The Sleety-vented Hummingbird (Amazilia saucerottei) ranges from west Nicaragua to Costa Rica, and also in Colombia and northwest Venezuela. Is found in second growth, scrubby savanna with scattered trees, coffee plantations and gardens, at openings and edges of evergreen gallery forests. Matures are 9 cm (3 inches) in length and 4.5 g in weight.

Above bronzy-green, shading to bronze on wing-coverts and lower back. Rump purplish-bronze. Below entirely glittering dark green, with blue crissum, and feet black. Feeds on trees, shrubs, vines, epiphytes, and herbs.
