Great Potoo

The Great Potoo (Nyctibius grandis) ranges from Guatemala to east Peru, central Bolivia and southeast Brazil. It lives in canopy of dense lowland wet forest. Adults are 51 cm (20 inches) in height and 600 g in weight.

Overall pale gray, shading to white on belly. Above and below lightly and irregularly barred and vermiculated with black and buffy-brown. Scapulars spotted with black. With an irregular band of black spots across breast. Wings and tail barred with black and buff, mottled with cinnamon and grayish. Bill blackish and feet pale greenish. This bird eats large flying insects, like beetles and moths, and small bats.

Common Potoo

The Common Potoo (Nyctibius griseus) lives from tropical Mexico to west Ecuador and north Argentina, and in Jamaica. Its place is in open woodland, forest edge, and savanna trees. Adults are 38 cm (15 inches) in height and 230 g in weight.

Above is dull grayish-brown, streaked with black on crown, and mottled and vermiculated with dusky and buff. Throat buffy-white with sparse dusky streaks. Chest gray-brown, mottled with buff. Belly grayer and paler. Bill dusky and feet brownish. It feeds on flying insects, especially beetles and moths.

Northern Potoo

The Northern Potoo (Nyctibius jamaicensis) is found from south Mexico to Costa Rica, and in Jamaica and Hispaniola. Its natural habits are in woodland and scrubland, with scattered trees. Its measures are 46 cm in height and 250 g weights.

Brown plumage, barred and mottled with gray. Upperparts black and white, and underparts paler. Crown broadly streaked or striped with black and white. This solitary and nocturnal bird eats beetles and moths and other flying insects.

The Oil Bird (Steatornis caripensis) breeds from northwest Colombia and Trinidad to east Venezuela, and strays reported in Costa Rica and Panama. This nocturnal bird lives in caves. Its measures are 46 cm (18 inches) in height and 430 g in weight.

Above is rich brown, and below and on wing-coverts are dull rufous to cinnamon-brown. Its crown, middle wing-coverts, and underparts are spotted with black. Primaries dark brown, and the margins spotted with white. Bill and feet are pale reddish-brown.

Band-Rumped Swift

The Band-Rumped Swift (Chaetura spinicauda) inhabits from Costa Rica to West Colombia and Central Brazil. Its natural habits are forest, semi-open, pastures, and agricultural land. Its size is of 11 cm (4 inches) in height and 18 g in weight.

It is mostly sooty black, glossed with blue. Its rump, throat, and breast are pale grayish. Sides of head and neck are dusky. Bill and feet black. It eats bees, beetles, wasps, winged ants, termites, mayflies and other flying insects.

The Groove-billed Ani (Crotophaga sulcirostris) ranges from Central Texas to North Chile and Northwest Argentina. It is found in savannas, plantations, pastures, lawns and open woods. Adults are 30 cm (12 inches) in height and 80 g in weight.

Entirely black, with scaly iridescence on head and breast. Wings and tail glossed with dark blue. Bill, facial skin and legs black. Flocks of up to 15 birds and sometimes lives in pairs. Eats insects like grasshoppers, lizards and frogs and berries.
