Pied-billed Greeb

The Pied-billed Grebe (Podilymbus podiceps) resides from southeast Alaska and north Canada to south Argentina and in West Indies. It frequents freshwater ponds, lakes, and smoothly flowing river. Adults are 33 cm (13 inches) in height and 450 g in weight.

Above dark dusky-brown, and below mixed and mottled with dusky and white. Pileum and hindneck are blackish. Sides of head dark brown, and cheeks and neck buffy brown to grayish-brown. Bill white and feet black. They feed on aquatic vegetation.

Eared Grebe

The Eared Grebe (Podiceps nigricollis) breeds from south Canada to northwest Baja California and locally to Mexico. In winters inhabits from southwest USA to Guatemala and accidental in Costa Rica. Its place is in high places. Its size is of 30 cm (12 inches) in length and 300 g weights.

In winter, its pileum and sides of head are blackish. Hindneck and upperparts dark grayish-brown to dusky. Foreneck, sides of breast, sides, and flanks are pale grayish-brown and mottled with dusky, and rest of underparts are white. In breeding season, its head, neck, and upper breast are black. Bill and feet black.

Tawny-faced Quail

The Tawny-faced Quail (Rhynchortyx cinctus) lives from east Honduras to northwest Ecuador. It is found in dense humid forest in foothills and adjacent lowlands. Its measures are of 19 cm (7 inches) in length and 150 g in weight.

In males, the crown and eye-stripe are dark brown. Rest of head is rufous, and throat is whitish. Its breast and back are slay, and the rest of upperparts are brown, finely marbled and barred with buff and black. Upper mandible is dark gray, and lower and legs are pale gray. This bird eats seeds, worms, and insects.

The Buffy-crowned Wood-Partridge (Dendrortyx leucophrys) lives from south Mexico to Costa Rica. It is also called Buff-fronted Wood-Partridge. It prefers the ground in thickets, in forest, and second growth. Adults are 33 cm (13 inches) in height and 350 g in weight.

Its face and throat are buffy-white, and its head is mostly brown. Upper back and breast are slate-gray, streaked with chestnut. Rump and belly are dull gray-brown. Tail dark brown, and legs are reddish. They feed on seeds, fallen fruits, and invertebrates.

Crested Bobwhite

The Crested Bobwhite (Colinus cristatus) ranges from Costa Rica to west Colombia and east Brazil. Its place is in rice and sugarcane fields, and in second growth and scrubby pastures. Matures are 20 cm (8 inches) in height and 125 g in weight.

The male’s breast is spotted with white. Posterior underparts are spotted and barred with black and cinnamon-rufous. Female’s throat is streaked with black, and they are buffy rather than rufous on head. They eat insects.

The Marbled Wood-Quail (Odontophorus gujanensis) inhabits from Costa Rica to east Bolivia and central Brazil. Its natural places are in hilly, and wooded areas in lowlands. Its measures are of 25 cm (10 inches) in height and 300 g in weight.

Its crest is dark brown, and sides of head are rusty. Neck and upper back more or less grayish. Upperparts are brown, vermiculated and spotted with black and buff. Below brown and barred with buff and blackish. Bill black and legs gray. This bird eats fallen fruits, insects, and earthworms.

Black-eared Wood-Quail

The Black-eared Wood-Quail (Odontophorus melanotis) resides in Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama. This animal is found in tropical and subtropical forests from sea level to approximately 1600 m. Its measures are 28 cm (11 inches) in height and 340 g in height.

Some features are its unspotted hestnut crown and blackish throat and face. It lives alone and eats fruits. Unfortunately, because of the forest destruction, this bird is in danger of extinction.

The Spotted Wood-Quail (Odontophorus guttatus) is found from south Mexico to west Panama. It frequents dense, thickety, often bamboo-choked understory of forest and second growth in highlands. Adults are 25 cm (10 inches) in length and 300 g in weight.

Its crown is dark brown, and its cheeks and throat are black, and streaked whit white. Underparts are olive-brown to rufous. Above is dull chestnut dull-brown, market whit black, rufous, and gray. Bill black, and legs dull black. This bird eats fallen fruits, seeds, tubers, and invertebrates.
