Highland Tinamou

The Highland Tinamou (Nothocercus bonapartei) is found from Costa Rica and west Panama, and in north Venezuela to northwest Peru. It lives in highland forests, usually alone and in the floor. Matures are 38 cm (15 inches) in height and 850 g in weight.

Adults are above olive-brown, vermiculated with brown and spotted with buff. Foreneck is olive-brown, and its breast and belly dull cinnamon to buffy-brown. Upper mandible blackish and lower yellowish. This bird feeds on fruits.

Great Tinamou

The Great Tinamou (Tinamus major) ranges from south Mexico to west Ecuador, north Bolivia, and central Brazil. It prefers ground cover of humid forest or adjacent second tall growth. Its size is of 43 cm (17 inches) in height and 1.1 Kg in weight.

Adults are above dark olive-brown, barred and flecked with black. Below are paler, barred with black and buffy on thighs and flanks. Its throat is whitish, and its crown is sooty-black or chestnut. They eat fruits, seeds, insects, spiders, small lizards, and frogs

Little Tinamou

The Little Tinamou (Crypturellus soui) is found from south Mexico to west Ecuador, north Bolivia, and southeast Brazil. It lives in dense second growth, weedy plantations, sugarcane plantations, and forest edge in humid regions.

Matures are 23 cm (9 inches) in length and 250 g in weight. It is mostly dark brown, and below paler. Its belly is grayish-buff, and its crown blackish. Cheeks are sooty-black, and throat whitish. Legs and feet dull yellowish-gray. Its diet is based on seeds, berries, insects, and frogs.

Thicket Tinamou

The Thicket Tinamou (Crypturellus cinnamoneus) lives from west and northeast Mexico to Costa Rica. Is found in forests and second growth, in areas with dense understory. In dry season they prefer evergreen gallery forest. Its measures are 28 cm (11 inches) in height and 480 g in weight.

Its upperparts are heavily barred with brown or buff and black. Underparts are mostly cinnamon-buff, barred with black on flanks. Throat white, upper mandible blackish and lower yellowish. It eats fallen fruits, seeds and occasionally in small litter animals.

Ring-necked duck

The Ring-necked Duck (Aythya collaris) breeds from east Alaska and central Canada to north and central USA, and winters from south USA to Panama. It prefers deep open water of freshwater marshes, ponds, and lakes. Its size is of 41 cm (16 inches) in height and 700 g in weight.

Its head, neck, back and breast are glossy black. Sides and flanks are gray. Belly white and iris dark. This bird feed on aquatic plants, insects and mollusks.

Greater Scaup

The Greater Scaup (Aythya marila) breeds in Alaska and northwest Canada, and in winters is found along both coasts to north Mexico, and accidental farther south. Inhabits in humid places, especially in salt ponds. Its size is of 46 cm (18 inches) in height and 950 g in weight.

This bird is similar at Lesser Scaup. Dark head, with green gloss. It has black vermiculations on mantle. Black breast and tail. Blue bill, and legs gray. This bird eats insects.

Black-breasted Wood-Quail

The Black-breasted Wood-Quail (Odontophorus leucolaemus) inhabits in Costa Rica and Panama. Its place is in understory of cool, wet highland forest. It is also called White-throated Wood-Quail. Its size is of 23 cm (9 inches) in height and 275 g in weight.

Its face and most of underparts are black. Belly rich brown, white throat. Above dark brown, barred and vermiculated with black, rufous, and buff. Bill black, and legs dull gray. Lives in flocks of 10 to 15 birds, defending group territories, and eats fruits and seeds.

The Plain Chachalaca (Ortalis vetula) inhabits from South Texas to Honduras and in Costa Rica. It is seen in tropical dry forests, scrubs and savannas, usually in groups. Its size is 56 cm (22 inches) in height and 650 g in weight.

This bird has a small head, long tail and neck, and throat bare red. Head and neck grayish, body and wings dull olive-brown and below paler. Tail blackish with green gloss and feet dull gray. This bird eats seeds, leaves, flowers and fruits (figs, palms, and Sapotaceae).

The Gray-Headed Chachalaca (Ortalis cinereiceps) ranges from East Honduras to Northwest Colombia. It is found along rivers or streams, in flocks of 6 to 12. Adults are 51 cm (20 inches) in height and 500 g in weight.

Its head and upper neck are dark gray. Chest and upperparts dull olive. Tail glossy greenish-black. Bill and legs are grayish. Youngers are browner than adults, especially head. They eat berries, leaves and fruits from Costa Rica like “guavas”.

The Crested Guan (Penelope purpurascens) inhabits from the South part of Mexico to West Ecuador and North Venezuela. It is seen alone or in pairs in canopy or tall second growth forests. Its measures are 86 cm (34 inches) in height and 1.7 kg in weight.

The Great Curassow (Crax rubra) is found from the Southside of Mexico to West Ecuador. It prefers forested countries, in lowlands of both slopes. This large and robust animal is 91 cm (36 inches) in height and 4 kg in weight.

Matures males are glossy black with white belly, with legs grayish, yellow cere and bill dusky with pale tip. Females have a rufous body and wings, cere grayish and yellow bill. This species feeds on fruits, and lives in flocks of up to 6.
